Here at tide, we give a voice to carers of dementia. We were delighted to be invited to submit a spotlight feature as an example of good practice on how a UK wide charity is committed to ensuring that the challenges faced by carers of people with dementia are highlighted. This report highlights the urgent action needed for Dementia Care worldwide. Anna Gaughan, Chief Executive said,
It has never been more important that governments as well as employers and policymakers, take action to recognise that carers of people with dementia are individuals in their own right, and not simply an adjunct to the person they are caring for. tide will continue to work with carers of people with dementia so that they can collectively use their caring experience, assert and claim their rights now and in the future.You can read tide contribution to the report on page 55. The report, which will be officially launched at our Virtual Side Event on 25 June, provides an important update on the global progress towards the World Health Organization (WHO)'s Global action plan on the public health response to dementia 2017-2025. It features a range of case studies on plans adopted and in development around the world and calls for urgent action, in light of the global COVID-19 pandemic, and the fact that national plans have been developed by only 19% of WHO Member States.Three years on from the commitment made by 194 Member States at the World Health Assembly, the pace of progress towards the target of having national dementia plans in 146 Member States is still too slow.World governments must heed the lessons of the current COVID-19 pandemic, which has revealed the necessity of working proactively to prepare for the growing numbers of people living with dementia and to safeguard against the disproportionate impact that such pandemics have on the dementia community.We are calling for all governments to develop national dementia plans that are fully funded and monitored and to build dementia into their national COVID-19 responses.
